Etymology:

The specific epithet is derived from the small mountain range, Sierra de los Huicholes occurring across the area in northern Jalisco from which the type specimen was collected and in recognition of the Huichol people (Wixáritari) who inhabit areas of Nayarit, Jalisco, Zacatecas, and Durango where this species occurs.
